Applying for Public Network#
After getting the cat disk, downloading torrents requires a public network. I applied for a public network with Shenzhen Telecom, and the process was very pleasant, just a phone call to get it done.
Usually, the application form will be sent to a local technician, who can remotely see the status of your public network.
Once you have the public network, immediately switch the optical modem to bridge mode. It's best to discuss with the technician so that they can help you switch it with a click in the background. My optical modem model is quite common, and there are step-by-step tutorials online for bridging and setting up the router.
Download Testing#
Following the advice of experts, I used Comet for downloading and qBittorrent for uploading. (Hope that the BT community in China continues to grow stronger~)
During testing, I enabled DMZ and Comet uTP download on the router, but the download speed was still in single digits. After ruling out cable and router issues, and after a series of tests and communication with the technician, it was confirmed that the speed was not reaching its maximum. The technician was called for an on-site survey. (To be honest, paying more than others every month but consistently using lower speeds than others makes me uncomfortable.)
About BT#
What is the so-called BT ecosystem? It means that the files you need are uploaded from someone else's computer, and after downloading, you upload them for others to download, and the medium of transmission is broadband, so it's free!
However, services like Xunlei just close the upload after downloading, causing others to have slow download speeds, prompting people to subscribe, etc.
Most people in China are used to using Baidu Cloud, Xunlei, Alibaba Cloud Drive to store data. Although not everyone can afford a large hard drive for storage, I hope that China can recognize the correctness of BT early on. If the BT environment grows, the big three will collapse.
Follow-up#
Due to previous tinkering, my relationship with the Telecom technician has become closer. He informed me that I can now upgrade to a gigabit connection at the current price, and I agreed without hesitation. The smooth experience after the upgrade is amazing. (P.S.: The technician also gave me a WiFi 6 router and later helped me switch to a 10-gigabit optical modem.)
Buying Broadband on Taobao#
- Beware of hidden pitfalls, such as being forced to buy the optical modem, initial installation fees, whether the price remains the same after the contract expires, etc.
- Check if you can change, upgrade, transfer ownership in the future, and if there are any rigid rules.
- Make sure that official personnel are coming for installation.
